Caring for your heirloom board

Our handcrafted chopping boards are built from rare, dense exotic hardwoods like Padauk, Purpleheart, Wenge, and Panga Panga. Because each board is air-dried naturally for years and crafted for a lifetime of culinary use, simple ongoing maintenance will keep the rich grain and intricate patterns vibrant for generations.

Frequently asked care questions

Find clear answers on washing and preserving your bespoke board.

Can I put my chopping board in the dishwasher?

No. Never place your exotic hardwood board in a dishwasher. The extreme heat, harsh detergents, and prolonged moisture will strip natural oils, warp the wood, and ruin the hand-joined seams.

How should I clean the board after daily use?

Wipe your board down with a clean antibacterial wipe or wash it gently using a damp sponge with warm, soapy water. Rinse lightly and dry it upright immediately with a clean tea towel.

Can I soak the board in the sink?

Never submerge your board in water or leave standing liquid on its surface. Excess moisture absorbed into dense hardwood causes uneven swelling and cracking.

Where should I store or display my board?

Keep your board on a dry, level counter or store it upright on its edge in a well-ventilated spot. Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat sources like radiators or hot stovetops, as intense sun can bleach natural exotic tones like Purpleheart and Padauk.

How often does the wood need oiling?

Reapply oil only when the surface looks dull or feels dry to the touch. Depending on how frequently you cook and wash the board, a light coat of food-grade mineral oil will restore its sheen and protective barrier.

What kind of oil should I apply?

Always use pure, food-safe mineral oil or a specialised board conditioner. Avoid culinary oils like olive, vegetable, or sunflower oil, as these spoil and go rancid inside the grain over time.

How do I apply mineral oil properly?

Ensure the board is thoroughly clean and dry. Pour a small amount of food-grade mineral oil onto the surface, rub it evenly in the direction of the grain with a soft lint-free cloth, let it soak for a few hours, then buff away any excess.

Why are Exotic Boards Co boards so durable?

We handcraft our boards using only the hardest, densest exotic timber naturally air-dried over several years. Their substantial weight and solid thickness provide superior stability that repels deep knife marks and endures decades of kitchen preparation.
